About the UK CAA Helicopter PPL Written Exams
The UK Helicopter Private Pilot Licence (PPL(H)) requires the same nine written theory examinations as the fixed-wing PPL, administered by the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) through Pearson VUE test centres. The content of several subjects differs from fixed-wing to reflect helicopter-specific aerodynamics, systems, and hazards. The PPL(H) entitles the holder to fly a helicopter as pilot in command, without commercial remuneration, in VMC (Visual Meteorological Conditions).
The nine exams cover the same subjects as the fixed-wing PPL but with helicopter-specific content in key areas:
- Principles of Flight (Helicopter): rotor aerodynamics, lift generation, retreating blade stall, translational lift, ground effect, dissymmetry of lift, effective translational lift (ETL), vortex ring state, and autorotation
- Aircraft General Knowledge (Helicopter): piston and turbine engines, tail rotor systems, anti-torque pedals, collective and cyclic pitch, hydraulics, fuel systems, and pre-flight inspection specific to helicopters
- Operational Procedures (Helicopter): confined area operations, pinnacle approaches, slope landings, engine-off landings (EOL), power-off autorotation, and height-velocity (H-V) diagram avoidance
- Air Law, Meteorology, Navigation, Human Performance, Communications, and Flight Performance: largely the same as fixed-wing PPL content, with helicopter-specific regulations and performance data where applicable
Pass mark: 75% for each subject. Retake wait: minimum 15 days. All nine exams must be passed before the practical skill test.
Important: Helicopter aerodynamics is significantly different from fixed-wing flight. Vortex ring state (settling with power) and loss of tail rotor effectiveness are among the most dangerous helicopter-specific hazards, and are frequently tested. A thorough understanding of autorotation (power-off descent and landing) is essential for both the exam and safe flying.
Key Helicopter PPL Theory Facts to Know
- Pass mark: 75% per subject
- Retake wait: Minimum 15 days before retaking a failed subject
- Autorotation: The emergency procedure used when engine power fails, rotor RPM is maintained by airflow through the rotor from below during descent
- Vortex ring state: Occurs during powered descent at low speed, rotor recirculates its own downwash, causing rapid uncontrolled descent. Recovery requires increasing forward speed and lowering collective
- Retreating blade stall: Occurs at high forward speed, the retreating blade loses lift as it moves slower through the air than the advancing blade
- H-V diagram: The Height-Velocity diagram shows combinations of height and airspeed where a safe autorotation is not possible after engine failure, must be avoided during normal operations
- Translational lift: Increased lift efficiency that occurs as the helicopter accelerates through approximately 12–15 knots into forward flight
- Anti-torque: The tail rotor counteracts main rotor torque, loss of tail rotor effectiveness (LTE) is a serious hazard, especially in crosswinds or low-speed manoeuvring
- Minimum age: Solo at 16, PPL(H) licence issued at 17
- Medical: LAPL Medical or Class 2 Medical Certificate required
