About the Life in the UK Test

The Life in the UK Test is a mandatory requirement for most people applying for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) or British citizenship. It is administered at official test centres across the UK, overseen by the Home Office. All questions are drawn from the official handbook Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents (3rd edition). You must study only from this handbook, no other source is used in the test.

The test covers six main topic areas from the handbook:

The test consists of 24 multiple-choice questions to be completed in 45 minutes. Pass mark is 18 out of 24 (75%). Fee: £50 per attempt.

Important: The £50 fee is paid every time you sit the test, there are no refunds for failing. You must wait at least 7 days before rebooking. There is no limit on the number of attempts, but each attempt costs £50. The pass result never expires once achieved, you do not need to retake it for future immigration applications.
