About the SRC VHF Marine Radio Certificate

The Short Range Certificate (SRC) is the minimum qualification required to operate VHF (Very High Frequency) radio equipment on a vessel in UK and international waters. It is a requirement under the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Radio Regulations. The SRC is issued under the authority of Ofcom and delivered by approved providers including the Royal Yachting Association (RYA). The qualification covers the safe and correct use of VHF marine radio and the GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress and Safety System).

The assessment covers four core areas:

Assessment includes a multiple-choice written exam and a practical radio operating assessment. Both must be passed. The certificate is valid for life, no renewal required.

Important: Operating a VHF marine radio without a licence or certificate is an offence under the Wireless Telegraphy Act 2006. Both the operator (SRC) and the vessel (Ship Radio Licence, £20/year) must be licensed. In an emergency, an incorrect or incomplete Mayday call can delay rescue, knowing the correct procedure precisely could save lives.

Anyone who operates a fixed VHF DSC radio on a recreational vessel in UK or international waters. If your boat has a DSC-capable VHF radio, you need an SRC. Vessels going offshore are required to carry a DSC radio, so the SRC is effectively mandatory for offshore sailing.
