About the HMPPS Prison Officer Assessment
His Majesty's Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS) uses a structured assessment process to recruit prison officers. The cognitive and situational elements are designed to test the values, judgement, and interpersonal skills required to work safely and effectively in a custody setting.
The online assessment covers three areas:
- Situational Judgement Test (SJT): scenario-based questions presenting realistic prison officer situations, you choose the most and least effective response from a set of options, testing values such as respect for others, de-escalation, and professional responsibility
- Verbal Reasoning: reading short passages and answering comprehension and logical inference questions, tests ability to absorb and apply written information accurately
- Written Observation Task: a short written exercise assessing communication skills, attention to detail, and accurate reporting, candidates are assessed on clarity and factual accuracy
Candidates who pass the online assessments are invited to an Assessment Centre which includes a group exercise, interview, and role-play exercise.
Important: HMPPS imposes a 6-month wait before unsuccessful candidates can reapply. The SJT tests HMPPS values, not general reasoning ability, so candidates who have not prepared for the values framework (Respect, Inclusion, Openness, Integrity) frequently underperform even if they are otherwise capable.
