About the PSNI Initial Selection Test
The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) is a separate force from those in England, Wales and Scotland, with its own recruitment process for student officers and Custody Detention Officers. Recruitment campaigns are managed with recruitment partner Deloitte and run periodically rather than continuously, with thousands of applications typically received per campaign.
After the online application stage, candidates who progress complete the Initial Selection Test (IST), an online, timed assessment made up of two parts:
- Deductive Reasoning: you are given statements or rules and must work out what logically follows from them, using only the information provided, not outside knowledge or assumptions
- Global Skills Assessment: a broader assessment of professional skills and judgement relevant to policing, covering how you approach decisions, communication and working with others
Candidates who pass the IST proceed to an Assessment Centre stage, which includes further exercises and an interview.
Important: The IST is not the SEARCH cognitive test used by most England and Wales forces, and it is not the CVF based exercise day used by Police Scotland. Preparing with SEARCH-style verbal and numerical reasoning materials alone will not cover the deductive reasoning format PSNI actually uses.
Key Facts to Know
- Recruitment partner: Deloitte manages the initial assessment stages of PSNI recruitment
- IST structure: two competency based assessments, deductive reasoning and global skills assessment, both online and timed
- Deductive reasoning format: work only from the statements given, do not bring in outside assumptions, even ones that seem reasonable
- Roles recruited: student officers (entry level police constables) and Custody Detention Officers, each with a separate process
- Stages after the IST: an Assessment Centre with further exercises and an interview
- Campaign timing: PSNI recruitment runs in periodic campaigns rather than year round, applications open and close within a set window each time
- Not the same as England, Wales or Scotland: PSNI's process, Police Scotland's CVF assessment day, and the SEARCH test used elsewhere in the UK are three genuinely different formats
Official PSNI recruitment guidance explains the IST format but provides only a handful of practice items. Practice Tests UK fills that gap with realistic deductive reasoning questions and professional judgement scenarios with step by step explanations for every answer.
